My way of working

Blue Dragonfly counselling and psychotherapy works holistically, with a model of person-centred therapy but through the eyes of Internal Family Systems (IFS) modality with sensorimotor psychotherapy very present.

IFS is a hugely transformative, evidence-based model of psychotherapy. In this model it is understood that the mind is made up of multiple parts or sub personalities, these are all welcome and all have a role to play within you, these parts contain valuable qualities. Within this model it is believed we all have a core Self and this Self knows how to heal allowing all parts within to be integrated and whole. This form of therapy is one that really fits with me and my clients, it is so gentle but very deep and powerful.

I will work with the ‘whole’ you, with all that surrounds you and is within you (or as much as you feel able to share). Health and wellbeing of your body, mind and soul/spirit. Within my practice I work ‘bottom up’ which means we will work a lot somatically, with body felt senses and explore their meaning/memory within your mind, thoughts and beliefs. This way of working is really helpful and insightful within trauma, emotional, sensory or somatic related experiences. These are mainly through the IFS and sensorimotor modalities which fit really well with me and the way I work.

My counselling/psychotherapy has developed greatly since 2015 and I expect that to continue, I’m constantly expanding my practice and developing professionally and personally from in-person classes, online learnings, books, videos, personal therapy, podcasts, from other therapists and from clients. Clients teach me in abundance, I learn so much from them about myself and about my practice.

Studying for me is a bit of a ‘need’, there is so much I‘ve yet to learn, as the saying goes “ you don’t know what you don’t know”. My path is organic, in that, I don’t have a detailed pre-planned path, I’m just ‘checking in’ with myself all the time and asking “what feels right?,” “where do I go from here?” and the trust in myself leads me in the right direction. Life is always changing, adaption and transformation are always present.

Dr. Richard Schwartz (Founder of IFS)  explains Internal Family Systems. A short overview of the therapy he developed 40 years ago.

All through your life your soul takes care of you…your soul is alive and awakened, gathering, sheltering and guiding your ways and days in the world. In effect, your soul is your secret shelter.
-John O’Donohue.

Sensorimotor psychotherapy uses the body as a source of information and a target for intervention. The body carries great wisdom and memory. Through working with the somatic-felt senses we can gain knowledge and insight into held traumas and attachment dynamics that can keep clients stuck in the past. We can then heal the physical and psychological adverse effects on the mind and body. This form of therapy is so insightful within trauma experiences, it is an extremely powerful healing therapy physically, mentally and emotionally.

Supervision

Like all psychotherapists I am required by my regulatory body (BACP) to have regular monthly supervision sessions. My supervisor has attained the highest qualifications of any learnings he has undertaken, these include him being Sensorimotor Psychotherapy ‘certified’ and Internal Family System (IFS) ‘certified’.
